Decanting Loveliness

I love jars! I even collect old canning jars, although not on a grand scale. For a long time, I’ve loved how things look when you decant them into another container, preferably a pretty one. Alison, over at Brocante Home has inspired me many times to try and find ways to make things look nicer by decanting them.

Lately, I’ve sort of fallen off the bandwagon, due to time constraints and sheer laziness. But then last night, as I was catching up on some blog reading, I came across one of my favorite blogs and there was a post all about jars and containers. Deb, over at Homespun Living (the woman is a homemaking genius if you ask me) was talking about redoing a cabinet in her bathroom. She mentioned putting some items in pretty jars and shared about a wonderful source for jars and containers.

If you haven’t ever visited Homespun Living, you will love it! Deb’s blog is filled with homemaking tips, recipes, and utter loveliness. The source she mentioned is American Science & Surplus. They sell jars and containers meant for scientific purposes but some of them are really cool and would be beautiful filled with household products.

Everything from kitchen spices to laundry soap looks prettier in nice jars. Some items aren’t practical to put into a jar or a bottle, but many things are. Make sure you label your jars, or you could end up putting a cup of baking soda into your peach cobbler instead of sugar (don’t ask how I know this)! For more ideas on decanting, you can also check out Martha Stewart, HGTV.com and many other blogs and sites.

I, too, store all that I can in glass, absolutely hate plastic! Everything just looks prettier, and it’s certainly better for the environment, especially when you re-use and recycle. My best finds have been at thrift stores and one of my favorites, World Market.

Rapunzel - I wish we had a World Market around here. I know you find such good things there.

You mentioned 2 of my favorite blogs (and bloggers) today! My list of “favorite blogs” has gotten so long that I can’t visit as often as I’d like or I’d never get anything done! LOL

Your new blog site is very nice! How do you like it?

Now I need to get over to Homespun Living to see what else Deb had to say!
    God bless.

Karla, I tend to “decant” into pretty jars as well, though perhaps not as often as I used to. My favorite sources are flea markets, garage sales and antique stores. I’ve seen old canning jars come across on Free Cycle fairly regularly too. Can’t beat that price! Nice post. Are the jars in the photo at your house?

Terri - Aren’t those blogs just fab?! Deb has the greatest ideas. I loved her calender so much I made one of my own, but couldn’t find a book to use, so I just used an old small binder I had. It’s so fun! I love my new site. It feels much snazzier!

Aisling - I love finding pretty things at garage sales, thrift stores and the like too. Sadly, no those aren’t from my house. I love those jars though. I did post photos back in March of my cabinet, filled with decanted baking products into my old canning jars. I’d love to find a way to decante liquid laundry soap, but then what would I measure with? Perhaps I should switch back to powder and just keep the scoop in the jar.
