Sam wonders where they could be. What’s taking them so long? Princess (in the background) watches the door, waiting for their return.
Our daughters Sarah and Ashley, and our Lhasa Apso Gideon, are spending time at Grandma’s this week. Their absence has been duly noted and the melancholic waiting vigil has been underway since late Saturday afternoon, only a couple of hours after the girls and Gideon left without them.
It’s been quiet. Too quiet. Even the normally high-strung Sam has been moping around, searching… longing… wondering… waiting.
And it’s not just the dogs. As much as we like spending time with each other, Karla and I always feel a little emptier when the girls aren’t around. They are so much an integral part of our lives that their absence leaves behind an emptiness that’s hard to fill. I understand what Sam is feeling. We’re all feeling it.
We only five days more until we go to Enid to pick them up. In dog years, that’s 45 days! Poor Sam. Poor Princess. Poor me!

Welcome to the inaugural edition of Wordless Wednesday. With a seminar that our department is coordinating today, I’m spending extra time working on that, which takes away from time to blog (and look for things on the internet that help inspire my writing and sharing). So, it’s a perfect time to introduce the popular weekly meme Wordless Wednesday.
Want to know how to get five dogs to sit still and pay attention? Hold a treat in your hand.
My mother demonstrates with (counter-clockwise from the top) Sam (our pug), Belle (mom’s Bichon Frise), Obie (mom’s other Bichon Frise), Gideon (our Lhasa Apso) and Princess (our pug). If there eyes had been lasers, they would have bored a hole in her hand!

Princess, our 4-year-old pug who’s queen of the couch, wakes up from one of her many weekend afternoon naps. The nearest available lap typically serves as her throne, but her throne of choice seems to be the much cushier lap of yours truly.
