Welcome to the inaugural edition of Wordless Wednesday. With a seminar that our department is coordinating today, I’m spending extra time working on that, which takes away from time to blog (and look for things on the internet that help inspire my writing and sharing). So, it’s a perfect time to introduce the popular weekly meme Wordless Wednesday.
Want to know how to get five dogs to sit still and pay attention? Hold a treat in your hand.
My mother demonstrates with (counter-clockwise from the top) Sam (our pug), Belle (mom’s Bichon Frise), Obie (mom’s other Bichon Frise), Gideon (our Lhasa Apso) and Princess (our pug). If there eyes had been lasers, they would have bored a hole in her hand!

Our pug Sam is the source of much amusement in our household. Aside from being absolutely adorable with a face that’s irresistible, his antics are quite humorous, although most of the time he’s certainly not trying to be. He is highly intense, especially when he’s excited, when he’s scared and when he really, really wants something — like a treat or any kind of food. So, when he’s anticipating getting something, he is very intense in his concentration on the source of that desired item.
Karla sometimes takes our dogs with her to the bank. Our bank often offers doggie treats when they see that there are dogs in the car. Well, as you might expect, the drive-thru is quite popular with our dogs and when they realize that we’ve pulled up to a drive-thru window, they are filled with intense excitement and sheer anticipation. Unfortunately for them, they sometimes confuse other drive-thrus with the bank drive-thru, assuming that any drive-thru window should result in a doggie treat.
Such is not the case with fast food drive-thrus. But Sam (and Princess the pug and Gideon the Lhasa Apso) haven’t made that connection yet. As we prepared to drive to Tulsa, we stopped by Sonic to get some of our favorite drinks. The “trouble” begin when we placed our order and the dogs realized that Karla was talking to someone on a speaker that sounds just like the bank drive-thru speaker. Their ears perked up and they all stared intensely at the speaker. Then we pulled around to the window and both Sam and Princess were nearly beside themselves with high-intensity anticipation.
