FRIDAY FUNNIES

It’s been a long, busy, tiring week. I need a laugh. The Daily Show filled the bill with its examination of ABC’s recent debate debacle, the recent Obama “elitist” controversy and President Bush’s War of Words.

Social conservative writer endorses Obama

Another social conservative who rises above blind party loyalty to support the candidate he believes will best lead this nation going forward despite important ideological differences…

Today I endorse Barack Obama for president of the United States.  I believe him to be a person of integrity, intelligence and genuine good will. I take him at his word that he wants to move the nation beyond its religious and racial divides and to return United States to that company of nations committed to human rights.  I do not know if his earlier life experience is sufficient for the challenges of the presidency that lie ahead.  I doubt we know this about any of the men or women we might select.  It likely depends upon the serendipity of the events that cannot be foreseen.  I do have confidence that the Senator will cast his net widely in search of men and women of diverse, open-minded views and of superior intellectual qualities to assist him in the wide range of responsibilities that he must superintend. Obama-sistible

YouTube has certainly demonstrated just how much creativity there is out there, given a forum for the “average” person to showcase their creativity, opinions and even idiocy. This campaign seems to have demonstrated just how powerful YouTube can be and has helped inspire some very creative videos… like this one… Continued

I choose Hope

I first became “politically aware” during the 1980 presidential campaign while I was in the sixth grade. At that time, the candidate that I was drawn to was Ronald Reagan. It wasn’t because I had any strong party allegiances — it really wasn’t talked about much in our household. What I can remember, though, was that I was attracted to his optimistic message of hope, change and a brighter future. And because Reagan was such an inspiration to me at such an impressionable age, I became emotionally bonded to the Republican party.

Seven presidential campaigns later, and once again there is a presidential candidate with a message of hope, change and a brighter future. (Mind you, this will not result in any emotional bonding with the Democratic Party, for there remains too much I don’t like about that party for me to ally myself with it.) This candidate transcends party identity. He inspires support from beyond his own party, including many independents (like myself) and even some moderate Republicans.

As you have probably figured out by now, I’m talking about Barack Obama. Today, I officially announce my support for his candidacy for president of the United States. Continued

Winning hearts and minds

In the race for the Democratic nomination, it appears that the Obama bandwagon is gaining steam. Yesterday, he trounced his rival in the so-called Potomac Primaries. He’s now officially pulled ahead in the delegate count. And his message seems to be winning the hearts and minds of the electorate.

If nothing else, it’s inspiring creative passions. Last week, I shared will.i.am’s video “Yes We Can.” Here’s another video that I ran across this morning. It’s hard not to be inspired after watching it.

Obviously this video was made before Super Tuesday — the contest that I couldn’t vote in because I’m a registered Independent — and the banner at the end is now out-of-date; but I just found the video this morning and it still seems worth sharing.

I’ve made no formal commitment in this presidential campaign. But I’m certainly beginning to lean toward one particular candidate. Perhaps this weekend I’ll share why one candidate rises above the rest.

Yes we can

Agree with all his policy positions or not, there’s little doubt that Barack Obama is inspirational in a way reminiscent of John F. Kennedy. He offers a message of hope to a nation longing for hope for a better way, much like Kennedy in 1960 and Ronald Reagan in 1980. Obama is inspiring young and old alike, Democrats, Independents and even some Republicans. He is even inspiring artists with the words that he’s spoken, like the following “remix” of one of his campaign speeches. You may have already seen it, but I caught it for the first time this morning.

Below the video are the words to the speech turned lyrics in the song, followed by a brief narrative about how it came to be.
